Pride Scotland 1999Strange FruitPride Scotland took place in Edinburgh in 1999, and had a theme of "Strange Fruit". As you can see, we took this theme to heart and decorated a massive float (called Bessie) with huge papier-mache strawberries, bananas, oranges and other fruit, as well as a pair of red lips. It looked fantastic and went down a complete storm. The whole float was designed and decorated by GMH volunteers who put long hours of work into painting, sculpting and decorating to achieve the final effect. Volunteers and staff all got dressed up in fancy dress, from gladiators and workies to footballers and catboy in fun-fur trousers with tail! Once we arrived at the festival we had a stall in the health tent (handy as it rained buckets!) and volunteers who went handing out information leaflets to all and sundry. A particular highlight was the special guest appearance at our stall in the health tent by Cher. Along with her glamorous assistant Dolly-boy, she encouraged punters to take part in a special safer sex game. Laminated cards were made with sexual acts printed on them, and punters had to shout out whether they thought this was safer sex or not. The results were put up on our specially patented cock-o-meter, which showed that the vast majority of sexual acts had little or no risk of HIV transmission. It was a fun day, and we even managed to sneak into the V.I.P. tent (naughty!)
