What can we do about it?

HIV stigma is a powerful barrier against effectively fighting the HIV epidemic.

We need to work towards creating a more supportive environment by challenging biased, fear based and prejudiced attitudes to HIV.

People with HIV should be able to disclose their status if they so wish without fearing rejection, discrimination and / or violence.

We can challenge stigma and prejudice by getting to know and sharing the facts about HIV - namely, that HIV can't be contracted through working or socialising with someone who has the virus and that, thanks to new treatments, it's possible for most people with HIV to lead full, active lives without putting anyone else at risk.

The only way to be sure of your HIV status is to have an HIV test. However, for many gay men, the existence of stigma and discrimination against people with HIV acts as a barrier to having a test and accessing appropriate medical and other services.
