Safer Sex Surfers

Under the Pink Fringe

9th August 1997

This was the launch night for an exhibition of art by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered artists organised by Gay Men's Health as part of the 1997 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The launch was a huge success, with celebrity guests Graham Norton, Scott Capurro and Margarita Pracatan.

There were sculptures, prints, paintings, animations, photos, videos and a section from the AIDS memorial quilt on display. We displayed some of the celebrity signed photos we'd been sent for the event from Elton John, Ewan MacGregor, Barbara Windsor, Pam St. Clement, Anna Friel, Jane Asher, Quentin Crisp, the Pet Shop Boys, Jo Brand, Julian Clary and Judy Dench, amongst others. We were also sent best wishes by Diana, Princess of Wales.

Free drink was kindly provided by C.C. Blooms and Route 66

Safer sex squaddies

December 1997 - 1998

These were our new recruits in 1997, hired to give gay and bisexual men on the scene a thorough drilling.

The Safer Sex Squaddies conducted many missions, going undercover into gay bars, clubs and cafes to hand out ration packs of condoms and lube, to boost morale and to provide up-to-date information to men.

Unfortunately the Safer Sex Squaddies were killed in action. We remember them fondly.

VALENTINES DAY 1997

We organised Valentines Day events in all the main gay bars in Edinburgh to launch a new brand of condoms and lubricant we would be distributing.

Our condom fairies went around all the bars handing out samples of the new condoms from their handbags.

In CC Blooms we organised Dr. Love's Surgery, which saw doctors and nurses giving out safer sex information from our stall.

Meanwhile in Route 66 we had a Cowboys and Indians theme, with staff and volunteers getting dressed up and handing our specially prepared packs with information and condoms/lube.

Other events were organised for the same night, including a karaoke bar in Maggie Rayes.

Venue staff and volunteers all got in the spirit and helped the launch go with a bang.
