Heaven and Hell

Pride Scotland took place in Glasgow in 2000, and we had decided to have a "Heaven and Hell" float.

Brian Souter (of Stagecoach) had been arguing against the repeal of Section 2A in Scotland (called Section 28 in England and Wales) which was preventing schools from tackling homophobia in the classroom or providing fair treatment to LGBT young people. Meanwhile, Baroness Young had been trying to prevent an equal age of consent for gay men in the House of Lords, and Cardinal Winning had created more religious intolerance against LGBT people through his latest statements.

Because of all the attention on us "sinners" we decided to have a "Heaven and Hell" float, with angels and devils dancing around our chosen celebrities : Baroness Young, Brian Souter and Cardinal Winning.

A favourite moment : the sound system broke down an hour before we were due to set off. As a result Craig (Counselling and Support Manager) and Paul (Events and Resources Manager) had to get in a taxi and drive to a local mechanical/electrical hire shop to get it replaced, still dressed as horny devils! They turned a few heads getting out the taxi and walking into the hire shop in the middle of nowhere in Glasgow dressed in feather boa's and glitter! The staff were very friendly and replaced the equipment, so they arrived back just in time and we had music for our float.

Again, our volunteers were the stars of the show, and put a huge amount of time and effort into making our float look fantastic, as well as helping send a message to those people who were calling us sinners. Thank-you dolls!
